Be Calmly Active and Actively Calm

Written by Pranaba Hansen for the AnandaYoga® Teacher Association newsletter.

Many years ago I came across an intriguing quote from the great woman saint of India, Ananda Moyi Ma. Commenting on Hatha Yoga, she described it as “doing by force.”
At first I was quite taken aback, and definitely puzzled. Her description seemed to have very little to do with what I had presumed about Hatha Yoga — especially from the perspective of Ananda Yoga, since our emphasis is on relaxation, both as a primary focus and as a key tool.

Insights from a Master Yoga Teacher

May 20, 2013

Swami Kriyananda
Swami Kriyananda, the founder of Ananda and of Ananda Yoga, was a wellspring of wisdom and inspiration for teachers of any subject. His teaching style balanced deep insights with common sense, and inspiration with practicality—all delivered with delightful humor. I am endlessly grateful to him—and he in turn always gave credit to his guru, Paramhansa Yogananda. He even said, “Ananda Yoga is Master’s Yoganandaji’s system, not mine.”

Paramhansa Yogananda
Here I’ll share a few of his many insights into teaching Hatha Yoga (all quotations are his words). Most of these points, in fact, pertain to teaching any aspect of Yoga.
Good teaching begins with discipline
Sure, we want to teach in an intuitive flow, but in order to align ourselves with that flow, we need to study, to understand all aspects of our subject, and then thoroughly prepare our class so we can present skillfully. As Swamiji put it:
If you want to teach something well, you need to know ten times as much about it as you have time to say. That backing will give power to what you do say. If one person has that backing and another doesn’t, they could say exactly the same words, but one will have power and the other will not. You’re giving students much more than information; you’re giving them vibration.

Yoga - An Elixir for Mind and Body

The Method of Kundalini Jagran

The Kundalini Jagran (release of the dormant energy) is achieved via physical and mental exercise. Physical fitness is achieved by the Yoga Asanas. They are a series of postures for exercising and stretching the body. Mental balance is achieved by Pranayama (Breathing Exercise) and Dhyana (Meditation). The Jagran of Kundalini is just the process towards the goal of self-enlightenment. The Bhagwad Gita the ancient book of knowledge and spirituality defines yoga as a means to achieve union with self. When the state of union with self is achieved the mind gets freedom from all desires and becomes absorbed in self. This helps to understand the true nature of life and the environment around.

Reducing Stress with Yoga Helps Lower Blood Pressure And Prevents Heart Disease

By [http://EzineArticles.com/expert/J_Russell_Hart/278755]J Russell Hart

Yoga combines movement, breath awareness, and mental focus. This integrated approach to movement supports the health of the body and the mind. Some practitioners and teachers say that movement through various yoga poses makes yoga a moving meditation.

During a yoga session, each of the poses, asanas, are linked to the breath. Movement is guided with the inhales and exhales. As the practitioner takes open poses, where they extend or lengthen the body, they inhale. When a practitioner folds or contracts the body as in standing forward fold, they exhale.

Yoga is not something like stretching, but creating balance in the body through both strength and flexibility. The continued practice of yoga makes the body strong, flexible and improves the functioning of the respiratory, digestive, circulatory, and hormonal systems.

There are a number of yoga asanas (poses) with different names and includes standing postures, seated twists, backbends, arm balances, inversions and core holds.

Healing Hearts with Yoga

By [http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Susan_Winter_Ward/0]Susan Winter Ward

Coronary Artery Disease, CAD as referred to in the medical community, is running rampant in our country and is the leading cause of death. Yearly, about 500,000 people die, 600,000 have heart attacks, and 800,000 folks suffer from angina (chest pain caused by blockage or constriction of the coronary arteries.) The incidence of heart disease is increasing and the age at which it occurs is decreasing. The statistics are pretty frightening. Medical intervention techniques are expensive, invasive, and not very effective in the long term. Treating the symptoms is only a stop-gap measure; treating the cause is the real cure.

Yoga is one of those ancient practices that can help you achieve a positive outlook, calm your mind, help you overcome stress and experience inner peace and serenity. After all, yoga means the union of the body with the soul and your inner self-achieving a dialogue with the external world. While many would have you believed that its fundamental benefits are physical and try to show it off its spiritual excellence, I feel the fact remains that all our physical well-being is intrinsically linked to our inner happiness and true purpose of yoga is essentially igniting this happiness of the soul. Here are some of the reasons why yoga has benefited me personally:

Cholesterol is a substance our bodies make and use to perform various essential functions such as making cell membranes and creating hormones. Most of the cholesterol needed for good health is produced by the liver, with the rest coming from diet. It’s essential for human life.
But too much cholesterol in our blood can put us at risk for heart disease and stroke. More than 70 million Americans have this problem. Some people can reduce high cholesterol levels by changing their diet and exercise, but millions need the help of prescription medicine.

5 Things You May Not Know About CoQ10

Today, millions of adults take CoQ10 for heart health. In fact, all of us have CoQ10 present in nearly every cell of our body. That’s why the two different forms of CoQ10 are called “Ubiquinone” and “Ubiquinol”- two names derived from ubiquitous, meaning “found everywhere.”
But many of us still have a lot to learn about this special nutrient. In fact, learning there are two forms of it can be a surprise itself. Here are five surprising facts that you may not know about CoQ10.
1. CoQ10 exists in two different forms
Ubiquinone is the first type. Sometimes called Conventional CoQ10, this form is found naturally in our food, and our bodies also make it. However, before our bodies can start using Ubiquinone to generate cellular energy, we have to convert it into its advanced form, Ubiquinol.
2. Only the Ubiquinol form is a powerful antioxidant
Ubiquinol protects your cells from damage. As explained in this 1990 study, Ubiquinol prevents oxidation damage to your cells by protecting against free radicals, which can contribute to cell death. Ubiquinone does not possess the same antioxidant power.
3. Experts encourage older adults to take Ubiquinol over Ubiquinone
Starting around age 40 — and even as early as age 30 — our bodies start to have a harder time converting Conventional CoQ10 (ubiquinone) into Ubiquinol. This, in turn, can affect the cellular energy our organs use to function at optimal levels. For this reason, some doctors may suggest adults over the age of 40 begin to take an oral Ubiquinol supplement. Other age-related factors, such as taking a cholesterol-lowering statin such as Lipitor, could increase the consideration of a taking a Ubiquinol supplement.
4.  Studies consistently show Ubiquinol is the form that’s easier for the body to use
If Ubiquinol is the refined gasoline that powers our cells, think of Ubiquinone as crude oil. One 2014 study found adults were able to get more cellular energy out of Ubiquinol than adults who had consumed UbiquinoneAnother study suggests Ubiquinol is better absorbed in the blood than is Ubiquinone.
5. Ubiquinol is better for heart health than Ubiquinone

Studies have suggested that Ubiquinol may have a more significant effect on your heart’s “ejection fraction” than Ubiquinone. Ejection fraction is the amount of blood your heart pumps with each beat. A 2008 study demonstrated improved ejection fraction with Ubiquinol. The same study found Ubiquinone had no such effect.
