You will find in yoga classes today up to 80% of the
class is female, why is that, when after all many of the most famous yoga
teachers and originators of yoga were actually men? Where ARE the men?
Of course there are a few reasons why men are not
joining yoga fitness classes –
Men find yoga a bit too girlie
Men think yoga isn't physical enough for them -it won't
challenge them to meet their fitness goals.
It seems to be that when men do brave joining a yoga
fitness class, they walk in see a room full of women and hear relaxing and
calming music without a weight bench or dumbbell in sight and they walk out -
it's just not a place he can feel comfortable in. Add to that a calm and
sensitive instructor the complete opposite of the loud and brash personal
trainer he is used to.
To most men - yoga is a *woman's thing*.
Men prefer to see changes and to have goals - they gain
muscle mass from weight training - bigger biceps, a stronger back, muscular
thighs - when it comes to yoga the changes are more internal, both emotionally
and mentally and for men it can be hard to see what they will gain from a yoga
class.
Occasionally you will see men in a yoga class hell bent
on performing the poses perfectly - they would rather put their efforts into
perfection rather than understanding the real benefits of a yoga class. Instead
of focusing on relaxing their mind they build more tension in trying to be a
perfectionist.
Sadly men have a fear of failure which is why they give
yoga classes a wide berth. Men have a gym mentality - they like the loud
pumping music, the repetitiveness of lifting weights or the feeling of pushing
themselves to the limit. Those men that do try a yoga fitness class give up
after a few classes feeling that they just can't perform or perfect the moves
required. Of course it's the fact they are inflexible and they should be doing
the classes in the first place to gain more flexibility.
Men - did you know that some of the world's biggest and
best known athletes are actually huge fans of yoga? Some of the biggest
baseball and NFL Teams in the United States actually offer their players yoga
classes to help counteract the rough treatment they receive on the field.
Yoga fitness classes aren't about who can perfect a pose
the best on day one - yoga is a gradual process and students have to find that
mind and body connection. If you attend a yoga class with the right perspective
only then can you call your decision to attend a yoga class a real success.
